Editorial Fellow

Location: Remote

Job status: Part-time (Roughly 4-8 hours a week)

Salary Range:  $200/week

About The Lever:

The Lever is a reader-supported investigative news outlet dedicated to following the money and holding the powerful accountable. Founded in 2020 by journalist David Sirota and a team of reporters, The Lever has quickly attracted a robust following thanks to its in-depth investigations and uncompromising analyses of matters related to local and national politics, business corruption, the labor movement, climate change, health care, and more. With its fast-growing subscribership, The Lever is building a news organization devoted to holding power accountable.

The Position:

The Lever is looking for a part-time editorial fellow with the drive to become a vital member of our editorial team. The fellow will be responsible for producing one aggregated news story each week (our popular Saturday feature, You Love To See It). The fellow will receive hands-on support from our editorial team, is welcome to attend our daily editorial meetings, and will be encouraged to pitch and write additional stories for The Lever, for which they will be paid our standard freelance rate of $400/story and up. The fellowship is designed to help cultivate the next generation of independent investigative journalists, with opportunities for internal growth.

Qualifications:

  • Experience and passion for hard-hitting independent journalism.
  • Ability to hit deadlines and craft clear, compelling, accurate copy on complex, highly scrutinized subjects.
  • Interest in tracking and responding to an ever-shifting news cycle.
  • Familiarity with digital tools including Google Docs, Slack, and Signal.
  • Comfort in operating independently, while also working in harmony with a small team of hardworking remote journalists.
  • Impeccable organization skills.
  • Commitment to The Lever’s subscriber-funded model and approach to accountability journalism.

Senior Investigative Reporter

Location: Remote

Job status: Full-time

Salary Range: $80,000-$120,000

The Position:

The Lever is looking for an enterprising and aggressive senior investigative reporter with a lengthy track record of delivering groundbreaking national scoops that break through the noise and facilitate change. The reporter will be a reliable self-starter, using their deep well of sources, mastery of open-record requests, and data-analysis prowess to generate ambitious investigative reports on political and financial corruption. And they must have the writing chops to transform weeks or months of reporting into a clear and compelling narrative.

This is a senior-level hire — only candidates with extensive experience producing high-caliber investigations related to government and corporate accountability will be considered. This is a fully remote and full-time, salaried position with benefits including a generous health care stipend, office expense reimbursements, and paid time off.

Qualifications:

  • At least seven years experience as a reporter, with at least three years focused on investigations.
  • Extensive experience filing record requests, tracking political donations, and scrutinizing business records.
  • A proven history of delivering impactful investigative reporting projects.

The Lever is looking for a diligent and resourceful investigative tech reporter with a track record of delivering impactful investigative stories that reveal how the tech industry is chasing profits, cozying up to politicians, and skirting regulations to the detriment of workers and consumers. The reporter will use record requests, subject-matter expertise, and a deep well of sources to generate vital investigative scoops. And they will have the writing chops to turn their reporting into clear, compelling stories that facilitate change.

Candidates who have a history of groundbreaking reporting related to the tech industry will be considered. The reporter will be expected to file roughly a story a week, with the opportunity to develop and deliver longer deep-dive reports. This is a fully remote and full-time, salaried position with benefits including a generous health care stipend, office expense reimbursements, and paid time off.

Candidates who have a history of groundbreaking reporting related to the environment, climate, science, or energy will be considered. The reporter will be expected to file roughly a story a week, with the opportunity to develop and deliver longer deep-dive reports. Location: Remote

Job status: Full-time

Salary: $60,000-$80,000

The Position:

The Lever is looking for a diligent and resourceful money-in-politics reporter with a track record of delivering impactful investigative stories that shed light on the inner workings of the U.S. political system. The reporter will use record requests, subject-matter expertise, and a deep well of sources to generate eye-opening investigative scoops and analyses based on the news cycle of the day. And they will have the writing chops to turn their reporting into clear, compelling stories that break through the noise and facilitate change. As we head into an election year, we’re not interested in Beltway gossip; we’re following the money to expose the backroom deals screwing over the American people.

Candidates who have a history of groundbreaking reporting on politics, political corruption, and dark money will be considered. The reporter will be expected to file roughly a story a week, with the opportunity to develop and deliver longer deep-dive reports. While the position is fully remote, applicants based in the Washington, D.C. area, or who are willing to relocate there, will be given priority. This is a fully remote and full-time, salaried position with benefits including a generous health care stipend, office expense reimbursements, and paid time off.
